When wasn’t that true?

Jeff gave the example. Tell a new hire to learn bookkeeping. Then ask them the capital of Maine. Then tell them to document your meetings. Then ask how far the sun is from the Earth. Then say stack rank why you’re employed.

That employee won’t know what their job is. Not because they’re stupid. Because you never told them.

That’s what most people do with AI. They treat it like a search engine with ambitions and then wonder why it can’t hold a line.

Jeff’s approach: one agent, one job. The bookkeeping agent processes transactions. It memorizes vendor libraries. It learns what good looks like for this company. It doesn’t get pulled into trivia or calendar questions. It wakes up and does its work.

John took it further: “The idea that you’re a bookkeeper is the problem. We just finished your job. Now look at the escalations. Think about them. Why did the machine get it wrong? Explain it so it learns.”

The agent learns. It doesn’t forget a vendor library overnight. It doesn’t make the same mistake twice if you correct it once. The human’s job becomes judgment, exceptions, and teaching — not data entry.

That’s not an AI insight. That’s the oldest management insight there is. Clear expectations produce clear results. The AI just makes it impossible to pretend otherwise.
